A hat mount party

Title

A hat mount party

Description

In the Spring of 2019, I was enrolled in a Care and Exhibit of Museum Collections class with Dr. Katie Knowles. For one class period, about eight graduate students and I were instructed to make custom hat mounts for headwear in the Avenir’s collection. I remember I chose a hat with a real bird attached to the brim and I was very proud of the little pouch I made to contain its fluffy feathery tail. My fellow classmate Jordan, loved the outdoors and National Parks and she chose a hat that resembled the typical park ranger hats. Another classmate, Colin chose a tall black top hat, which in a funny way represented his very formal but quirky and likable demeanor. Somehow the hats we chose represented our own personalities in some way. All of us gathered around a table in the back room of the Avenir, each with our chosen headwear and we all chatted the afternoon away while contorting fabric stuffed cloth tubes and other archival odds and ends into our hats to secure and support them. It was just a small moment in time, but we all bonded in that back room while making those custom hat mounts.
